La Mer/DUBAI

Located on a peninsula along the picturesque Jumeirah Beach coast in Dubai, the 7-acre La Mer development is a mix of retail, restaurants, leisure and entertainment options including an adventure park, water park and other water-based activities.

Working with Forrec, Ltd., a Toronto-based experience design company, we developed early concepts for the project including the Surf Point Boardwalk highlighted here along with (2) other zones including The Shipyard (Wharf Zone) and Expedition Cove (Scuba/Snorkel Zone),

Insights

Developing a cohesive concept isn't always straightforward. Over the course of this project, we explored pirates, ships, mermaids, reefs, the shipping industry, surf culture ... and krakens to name just a few.

At one point, a full-sized Spanish galleon docked off the peninsula was envisioned as a focal point for the development. This idea didn't survive, but we took that inspiration and integrated it into various elements including the hull of a smaller wooden ship where young guests could stand atop the bow to survey the Arabian Sea beyond or splash down into a cool pool of water below.
