Green Mountain

LEGOLAND Deutschland / GERMANY

LEGOLAND Deutschland is a 75-hectare, $200 million theme park located in Southern Bavaria, Germany.  It was the fourth addition to a successful group of LEGO branded parks and entertainment centers that now span the globe.

The Green Mountain was the focal point of a major flume attraction/ride called ‘Dschungel X-pedition’.  The story and theming were based on a popular LEGO “Adventurers” product line.

The mountain was erected and finished over the course of 9 months and encompassed over 48,000 SF of scenically-treated faux rockwork.

Steel, concrete, and a man-eating plant built out of LEGOS .....

Insights

I learned a lot about engineering on this project. The attraction was a flume ride...with a lot of curving steel track. The challenge was that this dynamic free-standing ride structure needed to be integrated into another gigantic steel structure ...a rockwork Mountain. The catch was that these structures could not touch at any point along the steel track.
The Man-Eating Plant model perched at the top of the mountain was an interesting project in itself. The model is triggered to animate (mouth/arms) as guests pass by, but it's not easy to continuously lift and move a heavy pile of Lego bricks, yes....the actual product. The expert model builders in Denmark came through and made it happen.
