Tidal Bay Resort & Entertainment Complex / CHINA

This project originated as a competition to develop a world class eco-tourism destination in the Jiangxi Province in China. The goal was to create a place that featured a one-of-a-kind resort experience with entertainment components that were accessible to resort guests as well as nearby residents and regional day visitors.

Working with FORREC from Toronto, Canada, we collaborated to design a ‘place’ that allowed guests to walk the same path of eroding water over time, trace the horizontal textures of rock walls hollowed out by lapping waves, and discover a peaceful retreat under the lush green canopy of native camphor trees.

Our team won the competition.

A place created by Nature that is of the earth and by the earth .....

Insights

I was fascinated by the web of waterways....rivers, marshes, estuaries and canals that surrounded the site. The intricate patterns that they formed over the natural terrain got me thinking about how this beautiful mosaic formed over time. That curiosity became the basis for the 'epic event' story that we created to guide the design of this unique resort.

The story provided an implied history for this place that we built upon while developing the program. The water park, snow park, hotels, restaurants and other amenities all manifested particular aspects of the epic event helping to unite the resort program and create a true sense of place.
