Futuristic City

Ningbo Speed Park / CHINA

Ningbo Speed Park was proposed as a family friendly entertainment anchor within a larger destination development featuring an FIA licensed racetrack, hotels, resorts and retail.  The project was to be located adjacent to the racetrack on a 62-acre site.

Working with FORREC from Toronto, Canada, we collaborated to create multiple options/scenarios for the venue that centered around transportation, speed and technology.  The design intent of the option featured here imagined a centralized ‘city’ as a pulsing power core that connected and powered everything in this ‘smart city’.

A race into the future along a ribbon of roads, highways and waterways .....

Insights

Sometimes a concept can take a left turn during development and turn into something else entirely. In the case of this project, the Speed Park turned into an Adventure Park. Transportation was still a strong theme, but this approach was deemed more family-friendly.
Theme parks are essentially 'small cities'. They are wrapped in a wonderful immersive package, but they are complex developments that need to support food, retail, guest services and support/maintenance facilities. Finding a way to integrate all of these program elements and still suspend reality for visitors is where the 'magic' comes in.
